What To Wear On Game Day

By Kristen Peuvion on September 19, 2014

Fall has officially arrived and with that comes the start of so many things: the start to a new school year, the start of cooler weather, the start of leaves falling and, of course, the start of college football season.

Attending football games in the fall is one of the most exciting parts of the fall semester and whether you actually like watching the game or not, you can’t deny that the atmosphere at a game cannot be described as anything other than a blast.

But whether you’re there for the game or the tailgating before, it’s important to represent and support your team, so you’ve got to dress the part. You might think you’re limited to standard t-shirts and sweatshirts with your school’s name or mascot on them, but that’s not the case!

Game day wear doesn’t have to be boring or ugly; in fact, it can be fashionable. Here’s how to take your game day clothes up a notch.

Take A Page Out Of The Southerners’ Book

Southern college girls take their game day wear very seriously. And compared to the casual clothes most of us are probably used to, you might be a little surprised with how all out these girls go.

Girls in the south typically wear dresses and cowboy boots to any of their school’s football games. The name of the game for these ladies is pretty rather than plastering themselves in head to toe school spirit wear. But don’t think that this means they aren’t repping their school spirit; their dresses are always in their school colors.

So take some notes from these girls. Your game day look doesn’t have to be just a t-shirt and jeans. Step it up a notch and dress up a little!

A pretty sundress in one of your school’s colors is the perfect look for all of you girly girls out there. Accessorize with a statement necklace in your other school’s color and you’ve got the perfect game day look that’s cute while still showing off your school spirit.

Dressing up for games isn’t only for the ladies, though. Guys in the south dress up for games, too. They’ll often be seen wearing khaki shorts and button-down shirts in one or both of their school colors.

Guys not from the south, follow their lead and try wearing a button-down to your next game instead of just a t-shirt. It’ll definitely take your game day wear up a notch.

Throw On A Flannel

Sometimes dressing up for a game and doing as the southerners do just isn’t practical for your campus or maybe dressing up just isn’t your thing. So should you just give up on looking cute on game days?

Absolutely not! You can still look great at the game without putting on a dress or dress shirt.

One simple way to do this is by throwing a flannel on in one of your school colors–even better if you find one with both of your school colors. Flannel has always been in, but on the Fall 2014 runway we saw a lot of it, meaning this trend is only growing in popularity.

Put one on over one of your school t-shirts to make your outfit a bit more fun than the classic t-shirt and jeans combo, or just wear the flannel by itself if you’re not the school t-shirt kind of person.

An added bonus for wearing a flannel is that it’s great for the fall weather. Not only is a flannel fashion forward, but it can also be worn in virtually any weather.

When it comes to the fall, temperatures vary a lot. It can be in the 80′s one weekend and the 60′s the next. Tie your flannel around your waist for the warmer games and then wear it normally once the temperature starts dropping. No matter what, though, you’ll be able to rock your game day flannel all season long.

Show Your Spirit With Your Shoes

Sneakers are big on college campuses these days. They come in basically any color you can imagine and they are even starting to come out with fun prints too. That being said, you’ll definitely be able to find a pair in one of your school colors.

Not only are they stylish, but they’re also super practical for the occasion. So put on your favorite pair of Keds or Converse for your next football game.

The most important part of football season as a college student is supporting your team, but don’t let that get in the way of still looking great on game day. Forget the run of the mill t-shirt you bought from the on-campus spirit shop and try something a bit more stylish.

Try out these suggestions at your next football game to take your game day wear to the next level.
